History and Background of the Program: Learn about the history of WLP!

We believe, the World Language Programs offer a unique and important opportunity that will benefit any child's education for years to come.

A.C.E. World Language Programs offer Seattle-area adults and children the opportunity to learn one or more of over 65 languages. WLP is part of A.C.E.'s committment to increasing international education and awareness, recognizing that international exchange benefits all participants.

We have been instituting summer language camps throughout Washington schools for over 15 years! World Language Programs (or a similar division) has been a part of A.C.E. since its inception over 35 years ago. Originally under the directorship of Ulrike Criminale and under the name "Customized Programs" we have progressed to offering more classes in any language imaginable!

We are constantly making additions to the program in order to reach out to the youth and community in any way we can. Currently we offer school based programs, customized programs, and summer language camps. If you are interested in any of these programs feel free to email us!

WLP Services:
  • School-based Program
  • Customized Program
  • Summer Language Camp
  • Song and Dance Programs
  • Teaching methodology:
The methodologies we use are "The Natural Approach", "The Communicative Approach", and "Total Physical Response", focusing on communication rather than language form. We follow the natural pattern of first language acquisition when teaching a second language, allowing comprehension to precede speech production. Our teachers are either native speakers or have an equivalent command of the language, having lived and worked or studied abroad. They enjoy incorporating cultural elements into the lessons.

    Goals:

    • Create awareness of other cultures through languages.
    • Provide a positive experience with a new language.
    • Introduce vocabulary and phrases through authentic, engaging activities.
    • Spark interest in further study.

    Testimonials:

Excerpts from Parent Coordinator Rita Lovely's letter about her child's experience:

My son "said that the teacher and the activities were fun, that he met other students from different grades in the school and learned with them (the young kids caught on really quickly), and that now he could talk to and understand people who speak Spanish when he couldn't before."

"The teacher was very engaging and made sure every student understood and was included before continuing on. You could tell how proud the kids were of themselves when they remembered a word or sentence from the last class"

"It isn't so much that they are going to learn how to speak a language fluently from this class, but while their minds are young and able to absorb so much, it will give them an introduction to a new culture."

"This class could be a little connection to your past, their [your children's] heritage."

Excerpts from WLP Teacher's letter about how teaching with A.C.E. gave her a second chance at a teaching career when she immigrated to the USA:

"Although it was only a few hours per week it gave me the perspective that I could do something different. This could be the job that would help me to return to my career as a teacher. Marita was not only my supervisor, but my friend and my adviser. She told me that I could obtain my license as a teacher and that in the future I could be a full-time teacher. The rest is history."

"Without the recommendation from A.C.E. and the experience getting to know the education system in the USA, it would not have been possible to be where I am today."
