David B. Woodward is the President and CEO of Associates in Cultural Exchange (A.C.E.) Mr. Woodward graduated from the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington, with a Master of Education degree in Higher Education/TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) in 1980. He also received a Master of Arts degree in Near Eastern Languages and Civilization from the UW in 1985 after being awarded a National Resource Fellowship. He began his career with A.C.E. as an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher in 1980, taught ESL for 7 years to immigrants and international students, and has held a wide range of administrative positions in A.C.E., assuming the role of President and CEO in 1998.
Since 2000, Mr. Woodward has led in the development of A.C.E.'s three community development initiatives making up the new Language Works! division established in 2004. These initiatives focus A.C.E.'s efforts to provide educational outreach programs for underserved children and families of multiethnic and special needs backgrounds in various targeted locations around Western Washington in partnership with schools, community organizations, funding organizations, businesses, and agencies.
Previously, he taught English as a Foreign Language at Kuwait University in 1982-83 and taught a course in Modern Middle East History for Seattle Pacific University in 1990. In 1992-93, Mr. Woodward worked with senior administrators and professors at Seattle Pacific University to create a new Master's Degree program in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages in articulation with A.C.E.'s intensive English language institute on that campus.
Mr. Woodward has been active in a number of professional international associations. In 2002 he was elected to the Board of the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation for a three-year term (2003-2005) for which he became the Treasurer in 2004. In 2003 he joined the Steering Committee for the Washington State Coalition for International Education.
As a member of NAFSA: Association of International Educators, Mr. Woodward became Chair of Region I (Washington, Oregon, Alaska, and Idaho) in 1995, served as Vice-Chair for the Advocacy Working Group of OSEAS (Overseas Educational Advisors), and has been a steering committee member for the Middle East Interest Group since 1993. As a member of TESOL (Teachers of English for Speakers of Other Languages), he served as a Local Co-Chair for the national convention held in Seattle in 1998. He has presented in numerous forums on program administration, international educational, language education and teaching pedagogy, Middle East issues, and community development.
Mr. Woodward is conversant in Arabic, Farsi, and French and lives in Seattle, Washington, with his wife, Ann, and two daughters, Amanda and Isabelle. He also is an elder at University Presbyterian Church, a member of the Seattle # 4 chapter of Rotary International, and is on the advisory boards for the Trade Development Alliance of the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Seattle, Venture International, Antioch University Center for Programs in Education, and Seattle Community Colleges Global Impact.
