A.C.E. ACCESS TO OPPORTUNITYOVERVIEW1/6

Access to Opportunity (A2O) Overview

The Access to Opportunity program based at
Aki Kurose Middle School in the Rainier Valley, funded with a generous grant from the Discuren Foundation from 2002-2004, is demonstrating the value of a holistic and integrated approach to serving middle school children and their parents in immigrant communities. The Access to Opportunity program under development in Native American communities, will utilize culturally-based content in a DVD format to assist parents with their children’s literacy skill development. Programs serving adults with computer and language literacy as well as English for academic purposes have been conducted in Mt. Vernon and Seattle. The newest educational outreach for parents of immigrant children is being developed in partnership with McKinley Elementary School in Tacoma with support from the Harold R. and Jessie B. Flowers Endowment Fund of the Greater Tacoma Community Foundation.
